From the Photographer
We’re thrilled to share this Sevierville anniversary photo shoot with you today, and not just because Kandi and Steve are celebrating 10 splendid years together, but they are also some of our dearest friends, and they’re also a husband and wife team of Knoxville wedding photographers, 2 Hodges Photography.
On Nov. 4, 2006, this sweet couple got married at Steve’s property in Sevierville overlooking the Great Smoky Mountains. Ten years later, and now with two children, Kandi and Steve live on the same property with their children. On a day much like the day they got married with a steady breeze and crisp fall air, Kandi got ready with their daughter, and Steve got ready with their son. Kandi’s gown had the most gorgeous sheer back with gold lace! After Steve and his son got ready, they rode motorcycles together, and then Steve had a first look with his daughter and Kandi had a first look with her son. Kandi and Steve had a private first look in the same spot where they had their wedding ceremony. Musician Stephen Goff sang a very special song as they danced together and the breeze blew across the mountains. After reading letters they had written to each other, their children joined them for cake and the cutest drinks in glasses with each of their initials on them! The children had gummy bears in their drinks, and their son ate nearly the entire bag by the end of their anniversary photo shoot!
Meet Kandi and Steve!
How long have you been married? What is your anniversary date? Where were you married?
We have been married for 10 years. Our anniversary date is 11/4/2006. We got married in Sevierville, TN.How did you meet your spouse?
We first met in our church parking lot, talking for nearly an hour. To keep the conversation going, Steve wasn’t quite ready to commit to dinner yet. So, he invited me go with him to buy dog food. As crazy as that sounds, I said yes. Thankfully, we had dinner at Outback after we left the pet store, and Outback is still our favorite restaurant.
Why or how did you choose your anniversary session location? How is it relevant to your wedding or marriage?
Our anniversary celebration was in the exact spot where we got married, which was on our family farm property where we live in Sevierville, which is right outside of the Smoky Mountains. We got married on top of a tall hill we call Tater Knob that has an incredible view, and as far as we know, we are the only people in our family to be married on Tater Knob.
What is your favorite date night?
Steve cooking a gourmet dinner and us watching House of Cards, Bosch or Family Man.
What is your best marriage advice?
Laugh often. And don’t be afraid to go to sleep mad. At some point we realized we mainly argue when we are super tired, and we just need sleep.
What is the most amazing thing about marriage for you guys?
Having children who are miniature versions of ourselves. It’s like getting to discover what each other was like when we were little. Also, discovering passions (like wedding photography) and pursuing them together.
Why an anniversary session? What inspired you to do it?
We chose not to exchange personal vows when we got married, but as a writer, I had come up with vows that basically wrote themselves. I found them written on a scrap sheet of paper soon after our nine-year anniversary, and I knew I wanted to share them with Steve in a special way. Also, we are wedding photographers, so we are constantly seeing wedding inspiration and how weddings have evolved since we got married. I knew I wanted to tell Steve my vows and eat some of my favorite wedding cake, so this inspired an anniversary celebration photoshoot with the theme “Things We Didn’t Do on Our Wedding Day.” The entire day was amazing, especially since we got to share it with our kids. In addition to vows and cake and photos, we had a First Look and finally had our official first dance.
How has marriage made you grow as a person and/or couple?
Let’s just say being parents and running a business together is a great way to see how well you communicate.
What are you looking forward to in your marriage in the next 10 years?
Dinner because Steve’s cooking is THAT good and seeing our children turn into young adults.
Any additional information that you’d want to share!
We were only engaged for 3 months, so I actually spent more time planning this shoot than I did our wedding, and we were so blessed to be surrounded by our favorite wedding professionals who are also friends!
