Introducing Caitlin and Hough and a little bit about their love story!
How did you meet?
Caitlin: Hough and I met at a restaurant we both worked at over the summer before our senior year of college at NC State University in Raleigh. He was a waiter and I was a hostess a few nights a week. We flirted all summer but he finally asked me on a date the week before school started in the fall of 2012. It was the best first date either of us had ever been on! We went to a nice restaurant near campus and our waiter actually told us he thought we had been together several years because we seemed to get along so well at dinner. We went on several more dates before deciding to make it official a few weeks later. We had been dating about two and a half years when Hough proposed to me in March of 2015!
Hough: Needless to say, I noticed her our first shift together and started flirting with her at every opportunity. I had to ask her a few times before she would actually go on a date with me before she said yes and I could not have been happier. I, of course, swept her off her feet and showed her a good time and a few weeks later we were official! (She couldn’t resist my good looks and charm)
Tell us your proposal story!
Hough planned the whole event and was able to keep it a surprise by asking me to go on a hike at Umstead Park with him and two of our mutual friends. I was very unsuspecting as we got to the lake about halfway through our “hike”. He offered to take a picture of our friends in front of the lake before turning to me and joking that we never take any pictures together. So of course I stand next to him in front of the lake waiting for the picture to be taken when he asks me, “Are you ready?”. When I answered, “yes” thinking he meant ready to smile for the cameras, he turned to me, got down on one knee, and pulled out the most beautiful ring I could have imagined! I was so surprised that I actually screamed and backed away from him, which of course was quite a surprise for him as well! Through the excited and ecstatic tears I managed the word “yes!”. The best part is that the entire event was caught on camera by our friends!
What is your favorite date night?
Our favorite date night would be going to a local brewery/bottle shop with our dog and just sitting together relaxing and talking.
What is the inspiration behind your wedding?
We both wanted a more casual, outdoor wedding that still had an elegant and classy feel. We both enjoy cooking and entertaining with friends and family which is what inspired our idea for a romantic backyard wedding!
Where are you going on your honeymoon?
We are planning on going to Denver, Colorado for a romantic and relaxing mini-moon before taking a more extravagant trip to Europe the following year once Caitlin is done with graduate school.
What do you love most about your fiance´?
Caitlin: “I love that Hough is the one person I want to share everything with, even the little boring details about my day. He is always interested in what makes me, me. He can always make me laugh, no matter the situation and I know he would do absolutely anything for me. He is fiercely loyal and I always know, no matter what we are doing we are going to have a good time. He really is my best friend and I can’t wait to become his wife!
Hough: I love that Caitlin constantly challenges me to be better in all phases of life. She doesn’t let me settle and is always there to nudge me in the right direction. Our chemistry is off the charts, you know how awesome it is to have your best friend be the love of your life? And she is beautiful and amazing and I honestly couldn’t imagine where I would be right now without her.”
What are you looking forward to in your marriage?
We are looking forward to being able to travel to and explore new places together as well as settling down somewhere new and buying a house. Really being able to enjoy spending time together and beginning to build the foundation for starting a family in the near future!
From the photographer:
Cana headed to the Charleston peninsula for some romantic and fun Downtown Charleston engagement portraits! Caitlin and Hough met while attending North Carolina State in Raleigh and he popped the question earlier this year. For their engagement portraits, Caitlin envisioned something classic and fun just walking the streets of Charleston and Cana was able to use Charleston’s beauty to make her vision come alive. Caitlin’s Southern-inspired look with knee-high boots was perfectly complimented by Hough’s flannel and jeans ensemble. Their styles were striking against the brick and natural settings Cana chose for the portraits. Charleston’s famous brick facades are perfect for any portraits. The exposed brick of another wall created a unique texture that looked fantastic behind the smiling couple. Caitlin and Hough strolled down a few of Charleston’s iconic side streets and alleys for out of the way snapshots perfectly reflecting the Holy City. The couple shared a few romantic moments in these secluded locations and the photos are lovely. As the sun set on White Point Garden by the Battery, Cana snapped a few more beautiful portraits. We adore how in love Caitlin and Hough are and it shows through in all of their gorgeous portraits.Thank you both again for choosing us to capture your engagement portraits and we hope you enjoyed your time wandering around Downtown with Cana. Congratulations!
