How did you meet?
Jake and I met through my sister and brother-in-law. We were both in their wedding – I was her maid of honor and he was a groomsman. We danced down the aisle to Chris Brown at their wedding (from The Office) and his goofy personality kept me laughing throughout the rehearsals. They introduced us that weekend and we went on our first day a few weeks later. 🙂
Tell us your proposal story!
So, Jake is definitely a romantic. His family is friends with Jeff Cook from the country band Alabama. His mom called me around the time of his birthday in March and asked if I’d want to throw him a surprise birthday party at Jeff Cook’s lake house later that month. So, I thought I was planning a fun surprise party for Jake with our closest friend’s and family, but it actually turned out to be his master plan to ask me to marry him and have all of our friends and family there to celebrate. I was so excited when we first arrived thinking I had outdone myself by surprising him with a party. During dinner, he called my phone and asked if I’d come down to the dock so he could show me Jeff’s new boat. As soon as I walked outside, I saw the long trail of rose petals and candles and heard “Marry Me” by Train playing in the background. I immediately had butterflies and will never forget that feeling. Down at the end of the dock, he had a computer set up with a video waiting to be played. The video was the most sentimental thing I’ve ever received. He got all of my closest friends and family to make videos for me to watch in the moments leading up to the proposal. Everything from funny memories to heart felt advice. When the video finished playing, Jake was behind me on one knee asking me to marry him. It was by far the sweetest proposal ever!
What is your favorite date night?
We keep things really simple when it comes to date nights. If we’re not hanging out with friends, we love to order takeout and watch movies in our pajamas. Our schedules are kind of crazy between both of our jobs, so after long, stressful work weeks, cuddling on the couch is usually our go-to.
What was the inspiration behind your wedding?
I found the most beautiful, rustic wedding venue before Jake and I ever got engaged. I knew for a long time it was where I wanted to have my wedding. That barn, I guess, was really the inspiration for my wedding. We went for a rustic look and kept everything really simple since the venue had so much natural beauty to it!
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
Ahhh, all of it! I enjoyed every second of our wedding day. My favorite part of the ceremony was in the moments after we said our vows. Jake had decided that the first thing he wanted to do after our vows was to serve me. He got down on the ground with a rag and a bucket of water and washed my feet – a sweet indication of what Jesus did for his disciples. He has such a heart for serving others and that moment was so special to me. Of course, we both enjoyed the reception so much! It was so much fun being able to celebrate with all of our friends and family!
What is one piece of wedding planning advice you have for our readers?
To start early! I had a little over a year to plan our wedding and I think that kept me from becoming stressed. I used The Knot app and it broke everything down that I needed to do in each month leading up to the wedding. I was extremely helpful!
What is one piece of couple/marriage advice you have for our readers?
To never stop dating. Jake and I try to set aside one night a week for a “date night.” Even if it’s just sitting down together for a couple of hours and watching a movie. Our schedules get so crazy, so we love having that time together to relax and just be together.
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
We went to St. Lucia on our honeymoon. It was a Sandals resort and we cannot say enough great things about it! It was phenomenal. We even ended up meeting some of our best friends on that trip whom we visit often. 🙂
What do you love most about your husband?
That he has such a servant’s heart. He goes out of his way on a daily basis to do whatever he can to make my days the best that they can be.
How has marriage made you grow as a person and/or couple?
It has definitely made us grow as a couple. Living with someone (especially someone of the opposite sex) can be challenging. I feel like we’re still learning so much about each other and we’re coming up on our 5 year dating anniversary. It has strengthened our relationship so much.
What are you looking forward to in your marriage in the next 10 years?
So many new opportunities. In the next couple of years, we want to do lots of traveling! After that, we can’t wait to settle down and start growing our family!
