Today we have a darling, rustic Ohio barn wedding to share with you!! Morgan Leigh Photography caught all the beautiful moments of the day for Kristen and Garrison.
We love their wedding day, love their sweet story and can’t wait for you to “meet” them and see all the beauty from their special day!!
How did you meet?
Our freshman year of college, at Cedarville University, we just so happened to be placed in the same Fundamentals of Speech class. We were assigned to complete a group project together, along with two other students, and exchanged phone numbers in order to stay in contact regarding the project. Needless to say, Garrison saw this as an opportunity since he had been trying to talk to Kristen and soon began conversing with her via text messaging. Everything snowballed from there! 🙂
Tell us your proposal story!
As college students, we try to stick to affordable, memorable, and fun activities and dates in our free time. One activity that fulfills these requirements is visiting antique shops, as long as Kristen doesn’t convince Garrison to buy her anything. We both have always enjoyed the shops in the area and Garrison decided to make this tradition, specifically Kristen’s favorite antique shop, a large part of the proposal.
Garrison had gone to this antique shop and asked the owner if he could restore an antique window and put, “Kristen, will you marry me?” on it. The owner was obliged to do so and then hung it in his shop as if it was for sale, just as Garrison had asked. After a traditional, yet unhealthy, dinner of Taco Bell one evening, we went to visit Rusty & Chippy’s Vintage Boutique just as snow flurries began to fill the air. As we were walking around the shop and eyeballing everything we couldn’t afford, we walked by the piece Garrison had created and hung and Kristen had to do a double-take only to find Garrison on his knee when she turned around. At that moment Garrison asked Kristen to be his wife and one true love.
What is your favorite date night?
Our favorite date nights are the ones at home playing board games and watching a movie while comfy in our pj’s, all while in our one bedroom apartment above an antique shop.
What was the inspiration behind your wedding?
We just wanted something charming, yet simple, much like the antique shops we visited weekly. We have always loved the rustic, outdoor look and were able to find creative and attractive ways to incorporate that in our big day.
What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
Kristen: My favorite part of the wedding was our first look. I was so nervous and excited about everything and getting to see Garrison helped calm me down so much. It was really nice to have some time alone together before the day really got going to just be with each other and really dwell in the moment.
Garrison: I don’t know that there is one particular part of the day that I can pinpoint and say, “That’s my favorite.” However, I can share some of the things that I enjoyed and cherish the most now. One of those is the first look and being able to see my beautiful bride for the first time. It was also incredible to be able to call her my wife after reading the vows that we wrote for each other and finally being able to have our first dance together as Mr. & Mrs.
What is one piece of wedding planning advice you have for our readers?
Don’t get stressed!! It really takes the fun out of the planning. Not everything is going to work out the way you planned, but it will still be perfect on the day of your wedding and it won’t matter whether everything goes exactly as planned. Regardless of all the planning that is done, you are still married at the end of the day and there is nothing more exciting.
What is one piece of couple/marriage advice you have for our readers?
Marriage isn’t always easy. But love is a choice and it is something you must choose everyday, even when you don’t feel it. Choose to love each other, despite flaws despite bad days, and despite a farting husband or a snoring wife. Always be in open communication with one another. We have seen that simply communicating with one another will resolve, and even prevent, conflict. Through transparent communication, a couple gains trust and respect for each other.
Where did you go on your honeymoon?
For our honeymoon, we went to Berlin, Ohio and stayed in an Amish built tree house. It was a fantastic trip! Our favorite parts were the tree house and the tour we took where we learned a lot about the Amish way of life. While there, we were able to find several antique shops and an antique mall as well as a cheese and ice-cream factory, both of which we were able to tour. We went to the oldest drive-in movie theater in Ohio (second oldest in the U.S.) and took a day trip to a beach on Lake Erie. Unfortunately, we had car and medical problems on the trip resulting in some changes in our plans but we still ended up with a great trip which came to a close with a night camping by a fire while playing board games and eating cheese from our visit to the cheese factory. Looking back, it doesn’t matter where you go on your honeymoon, it’s about celebrating and concreting your new marriage.
What do you love most about your wife?
Everything! Well, if I had to pick one thing in particular, I’d have to say her understanding. She is very understanding of what I have going on but not only that, she is forgiving. I can see Christ in her through her understanding and forgiving nature. One thing that I do find really attractive are her motherly instincts. I don’t know how she does it. I guess it’s natural to women.
What do you love most about your husband?
I love his character. He is very understanding and patient and he is an amazing listener. He can always make me smile.
How has marriage made you grow as a person and/or couple?
Marriage does funny things to people. I know, that’s kind of odd to hear but I’m not saying that in a bad context. Marriage encourages you, as an individual, to be more selfless and responsible. Marriage pushes you to be more caring and loving. When done right, marriage is a beautiful thing.
What are you looking forward to in your marriage in the next 10 years?
We are looking forward to purchasing a house and starting a family together. We are excited to know each other even better and grow together in our relationship with Christ.
From the photographer:
In front of friends and family, Garrison and Kristen promised themselves to one another. The day was filled with laughter, smiles, and happy tears. Everyone gathered in the house at Polen Farm and got ready for the big day. The morning was busy with makeup, hairspray, gifts, and sweet memories that will last a lifetime. Moments after getting dressed with the help of her mother and bridesmaids, Kristen walked down the stairs to share a sweet First Look with her father and grandparents. Cue the happy tears!! Garrison waited outside the house, anxiously waiting to be tapped on his shoulder by his bride. Garrison and Kristen spent their wedding day together. Soon it was time for the ceremony. It sprinkled just enough to bring Garrison and Kristen good luck, but shortly stopped right before it was time for the ceremony to begin! Garrison and Kristen wrote their own vows and promises to one another. These vows revealed their love and passion for each other and their future marriage.
