Southern California’s Wine Country Wedding | Nicole Marie Photography

Ahhhh, you will love the Southern California’s Wine Country Wedding we have for you today!!! Caitlin + Bobby had a romantic, small and private wedding that was just breathtaking!!

Nicole Marie Photography caught every detail of their special day!!!

Meet Caitlin + Bobby!

How did you meet?
I had only been in California a week or so before I tagged along with a close childhood friend to watch a Michigan Wolverines Football game in Huntington Beach. Bobby and I both grew up in Michigan and went to the University of Michigan. I was new to California and when Bobby introduced himself and proposed we go paddle boarding sometime it sounded like a great idea—so I gave him my number. Ten months later—after eight months of dating we finally went paddle boarding (and he proposed).

Tell us your proposal story!
He woke up early on a Sunday (suspicious) and suggested we do something ‘fun’. After turning down hiking, golfing, biking, and hitting the beach I finally suggested paddle boarding. “Great Idea” he said—and off we went. He was paddling SO fast and was acting somewhat strange, when he asked me to steady his board I didn’t think anything of it. He got down on one knee (on a paddle board) and proposed (with a ring tied to about 5 corks, he didn’t want to risk it sinking). I said YES. We headed to the bar in Huntington Beach where we had met and celebrated with our own personal mimosa and french-fry bar crawl (reminiscent of the first time we met). We were married ten months later (20 months from the very first time we met)

What was the inspiration behind your wedding?
We knew we wanted a very small and private wedding. I didn’t want an extravagant wedding—I just wanted to celebrate our marriage with a few good drinks and the people we love. We knew we wanted something simple, outdoors, and beautiful. The wedding venue was a private residence with decks that swept along the back of the house and looked out over the Santa Rosa Plateau. It was more perfect than we ever could have imagined. I really thought of our wedding as a dinner party, it made decision making a lot simpler. Great friends and family, good drinks, and pretty amazing food made for a perfect day.

What was your favorite part of your wedding day?
The cocktail hour before the ceremony was my favorite part of the wedding (I wouldn’t have missed it, I threw on a short dress and came downstairs to welcome all of our guests!) The appetizers featured Dates stuffed with blue cheese wrapped in apple-wood bacon, Zucchini Fritters with spicy plum sauce & sour cream, and brie and berry kebabs. The drinks featured Lavender lemonade, Sangria, Lemon Verbena water, champagne, and a cooler full of craft beers. But second to those bacon wrapped dates and mimosas– definitely standing at the alter (our vows were ‘Princess Bride’ themed!)

What is one piece of wedding planning advice you have for our readers?
Remember to have fun at your wedding! If you are relaxed, laid back, and having fun—everyone else will be too! Also, this is a party you are throwing to celebrate YOUR marriage (so make sure to have a few drinks and enjoy the dinner) and don’t take others’ expectations too seriously.

What is one piece of couple/marriage advice you have for our readers?
If you are having a disagreement, hold hands. It seems simple, but it’s the best advice we have been given.

Where did you go on your honeymoon?
Our honeymoon was absolutely perfect. We took a three week trip to Spain, France, and Italy. We travelled to Barcelona and spent a few days drinking Sangria and eating Paella before hopping on a train and heading to France. We rented a car and road-tripped the South of France. Our absolutely favorite stops were the villages of Luberon in Provence (where we drank the best rose’ and stayed at a bed and breakfast surrounded by fruit orchards and vineyards) and Cassis. Cassis was a small village outside of Marseille with long hikes to the Calanques and swimming during the day and wonderful dinners at night. I highly recommend both! We finished our trip with a tour of the French Riviera and a few days hiking the cinque terre in northern Italy before finally flying out of Genoa.

What do you love most about your husband?
Love most? What a tricky question. I love how loving he is, I love when he has a cup of tea brewing after a long day, I love that he encourages me to grow both professionally and as a person. I love how much fun our life is together, I love that we are a great team, best friends, perfect travel companions, and each other’s biggest fan. I think we both know how lucky we were to have found each other, I am thankful for every single morning I get to wake up with him. I love him more than words could possibly explain.

How has marriage made you grow as a person and/or couple?
Marriage is compromise but it’s also complete happiness. He deals well with my spontaneous desire to paint rooms and purchase “knick-knacks” at the local antiques market and I make sure to stay cognizant of his preference for clean and uncluttered spaces. He always surprises me with clean laundry and I make sure to wake up early to put the dishes away. When my goal is just to see my husband’s handsome smile—it makes everything a little more fun. We are a team—and that is above all the most important.

What are you looking forward to in your marriage in the next 10 years?
The next ten years? More adventures, more happiness, more people to love and share our life with. I don’t care where we are in ten years, as long as we are able to be together.

Any additional information that you’d want to share!
We kept the details simple; the bouquet was made from roses and lavender picked from gardens on the property. The property owner even made the boutonniere from succulents she had on hand.
The style was very laid back; I was more concerned about making sure someone picked up Bobby’s favorite beer from Belching Beaver Brewery than I was about the decorations. A few of our wedding guests worked with the owner of the house to put together the flower arrangements the day of the wedding. Roses, purple lavender, and succulents were the star of the wedding, only because they were in season!
The wedding cakes were perfect! Bobby requested a homemade vanilla-coconut cream cake and we also had a gluten free banana pineapple hummingbird cake with cream cheese frosting. We also served homemade pies, vanilla ice cream, and Peanut butter Stout-Floats. The belching Beaver Brewery Peanut-Butter-Stout and Vanilla ice cream was my surprise drink for Bobby.
A very large majority of the wedding guests flew out to California from Michigan. It was important to us that the entire weekend was a celebration. We decided to do the wedding on Friday so that we could have Saturday and Sunday to relax and enjoy the weekend with our guests. At the wedding we had custom corn hole boards and giant Jenga. The rest of the wedding featured wine tasting, golfing, a large family style dinner, and a few days spent poolside with our closest friends and family.

From the Photographer:
Caitlin and Bobby enjoys the great outdoors, anything from hiking the California hillside to enjoying the sounds the west coast waters have to offer. Although they were born and raised in the Midwest, they decided that having their wedding in California would be a true celebration of the life they have built together. Caitlin & Bobby hit gold when they found their Venue, Plateau Edge in Southern California’s wine country. The owner of the house Laura Komers, a green architectural designer, designed and built this 6,000 sq. ft. eco-friendly plateau house with an attached barn pavilion, and an organic farm. One of the most beautiful venues I have ever seen, with it’s 2,000 sq ft of decks and 2,500 sq ft of patios perfectly situated on 5 wooded acres located on the edge of the Santa Rosa Plateau Ecological Reserve. Laura & her husband Ron offer full service with this venue. They did all the decorating, made all the dessert, and cooked and served the dinner. Every flower, including the bouquets came from her garden. This wedding was beautiful, vibrant & elegant in every way.
